In 1984, a seemingly serene and beautiful lake in Western Cameroon named Lake Monoun did something entirely unexpected: it exploded and, as a result, caused the death of 37 people nearby. Known as a 'limnic eruption,' this natural incident was initially attributed to various rumors, ranging from evil spirits to covert political activities. Nevertheless, what transpired remained shrouded under pervasive confusion owing to the relatively unknown nature of such phenomena. It was not until foreign scientists investigated that they discovered lurking beneath the picturesque waterscape was a high concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) sourced from subterranean magma activity. Under extremely pressurized conditions at the lake bed, gas-saturated H2O acts almost like a pressurized soda water bottle. On that fateful day, perhaps due to landslides or gradual seepage over time, a catastrophic depressurization occurred akin to popping open a shaken soda. The resultant violently effervescing CO2 displaced water, leading to an unprecedentedly massive eruption spanning up to 100 meters across, spiraling into the air with deafening sonic booms. Subsequently, leading regional authorities implemented degassing solutions using pipe systems, allowing slow release to prevent future tragedy.
